Worshipping the Kami

 

Ippen , who was able to consider the entirety of Kamakura Buddhism , thought that through merely the exclusive nembutsu , the religious desire to worship the kami of ancient Japan could not be accommodated. This means that his karmic connection to the kami , beginning with the kami of Kumano , was necessary for him to remain in the mainstream of Japanese religious history.

神祇崇拝

 

鎌倉仏教を総合的に観察できる立場にあった一遍は、専修念仏だけでは日本古来の神祇崇拝の宗教感情に合致しないと考えたのであろう。このような意味で熊野神を初めとする神祇との結縁は宗教史の流れの上に立つと一つの必然でもあったと思われる。
