Pure Land thought in Japan

 

For Honen , the nembutsu had been selected as the correctly established action , and living beings should have faith in the vow of the Buddha and recite the name of Amida. This meant that both practice and faith were something that belonged to living beings. But Shinran understood both practice and faith to be given to living beings through the transfer of merit from the Buddha.  All religions have as their final goal the salvation of foolish living beings.  In this sense , Pure Land Buddhism is a type of extreme Buddhism at which Mahayana Buddhism inevitably arrived.

日本の浄土思想

 

法然にあって、念仏は正定の業として選ばれ衆生は仏の誓いを信じて、弥陀の名を称える。その意味では「行」も「信」も衆生の側にあった。親鸞にあっては行も信も仏の側からの廻向と解された。如何なる宗教もその最終的な目的は、凡愚である衆生の「救済」である。そういった意味では、浄土教は大乗仏教が必然的に辿り着く究極の仏教思想であったといえよう。
