Yugyo Travels Around the Country

Ippen, having left the Shingu shrine, traveled on the Saikaido road, by way of Kyoto.

In the autumn of Kenji 1 (1275), he returned to Iyo. After saving living beings bound

by karma, he proselytized throughout the country and in Kenji 2 (1276) once again

traveled to Iyo. Then he crossed over to Kyushu and visited Shodatsu at Dazaifu.

It is said that he engaged in discussions of the Dharma even when in the bath. Shodatsu

asked, “How is it that you do not advocate ten recitations, and instead advocate just one?”

Ippen replied by explaining the theory of the “nonduality of ten and one.”

Shodatsu, who exclaimed in wonder at this teaching, said, “If this is the case, then I wish

to be granted one hundred repetitions,” and was then granted one hundred repetitions

of the nembutsu.
