Koya, there was a woodblock for the printing of the<\/p>\n<p>phrase Namu Amida Butsu that was said to have been carved by Kobo Daishi<\/p>\n<p>himself. It was revered as the main object of worship.\u00a0 Koya hijiri used this<\/p>\n<p>main object of worship to print paper nembutsu fuda. In this way, belief in Kobo<\/p>\n<p>Daishi spread throughout the country.\u00a0 Moreover,\u00a0 Sugo\u2019s Iwayaji temple,<\/p>\n<p>where Ippen secluded himself, was a site sacred to Kobo Daishi. \u00a0At that time,<\/p>\n<p>surely one could have witnessed Koya hijiri distributing nembutsu fuda and seeking<\/p>\n<p>to convert people.\u00a0 It is not certain how Ippen came up with the idea of fuda distribution, but it is clear that temples and shrines at that time were already printing fuda.
