This is an urgent topic for those of us who live in the world of the twenty-first century. Therefore, even now, learning about Ippen\u2019s life and thought is profoundly meaningful.<br \/>\n(Ippen\u30005\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u3088\u308a)<\/p>\n<p>\u4eba\u306e\u3080\u304d\u3060\u3057\u306e\u6b32\u3068\u81ea\u7136\u3068\u306e\u8abf\u548c\u3092\u3044\u304b\u306b\u3068\u308b\u304b\u3001\u3069\u3046\u3059\u308c\u3070\u6301\u7d9a\u53ef\u80fd\u306a\u5730\u7403\u74b0\u5883\u306e\u7dad\u6301\u304c\u3067\u304d\u308b\u306e\u304b\u3002<br \/>\n\u3053\u308c\u304c21\u4e16\u7d00\u306e\u4e16\u754c\u306b\u751f\u304d\u308b\u6211\u3005\u306e\u55ab\u7dca\u306e\u8ab2\u984c\u3067\u3042\u308b\u3002<br \/>\n\u305d\u3053\u306b\u4e00\u904d\u306e\u751f\u6daf\u3068\u601d\u60f3\u3092\u4eca\u306a\u304a\u5b66\u3076\u610f\u7fa9\u6df1\u3055\u306e\u6240\u4ee5\u304c\u3042\u308b\u3002<\/p>\n<p>In the history of Japanese Buddhism , as time passed , the idea of an exclusive practice\u00a0that had been advocated by Honen gradually evolved in new ways , due to the continuing\u00a0emergence of important Buddhist figures . Among these , Ippen , who was active in the\u00a0late Kamakura period , developed the ideas of Honen\u2019s leading disciple Shoku into a\u00a0unique understanding of the spoken name (myogo \u540d\u53f7). By combining the distribution\u00a0of fuda with dance , Ippen elevated Pure Land teachings to new heights. I will discuss\u00a0Ippen\u2019s life and his religious ideas , relating it to both politics and Buddhist history ,\u00a0based on the Ippen hijirie and the Ippen Shonin ekotobaden , which are foundational texts\u00a0for the study of Ippen.<br \/>\n( Ippen 6\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u3088\u308a)<\/p>\n<p>\u65e5\u672c\u4ecf\u6559\u306e\u6b74\u53f2\u306b\u304a\u3044\u3066\u3001\u6cd5\u7136\u306b\u3088\u3063\u3066\u5531\u5c0e\u3055\u308c\u305f\u5c02\u4fee\u306e\u601d\u60f3\u306f\u6642\u4ee3\u3092\u7d4c\u308b\u306b\u5f93\u3044\u3001\u6b21\u3005\u3068\u8f29\u51fa\u3057\u305f\u4ecf\u6559\u8005\u306b\u3088\u3063\u3066\u65b0\u3057\u304f\u5c55\u958b\u3057\u3066\u3044\u304f\u3002<br \/>\n\u305d\u306e\u4e2d\u306b\u3042\u3063\u3066\u938c\u5009\u6642\u4ee3\u672b\u671f\u306b\u6d3b\u8e8d\u3057\u305f\u4e00\u904d\u306f\u3001\u6cd5\u7136\u306e\u9ad8\u5f1f\u8a3c\u7a7a\u306e\u601d\u60f3\u3092\u72ec\u4e00\u306e\u540d\u53f7\u601d\u60f3\u3078\u3068\u767a\u5c55\u3055\u305b\u8ce6\u7b97\u3068\u8e0a\u308a\u3092\u4e00\u4f53\u5316\u3055\u305b\u308b\u3053\u3068\u306b\u3088\u3063\u3066\u3001\u6d44\u571f\u6559\u3092\u6b62\u63da\u3055\u305b\u305f\u611f\u304c\u3042\u308b\u3002<br \/>\n\u672c\u8ad6\u306f\u3001\u3053\u3046\u3057\u305f\u4e00\u904d\u306e\u751f\u6daf\u3068\u5b97\u6559\u3068\u306b\u3064\u3044\u3066\u6839\u672c\u8cc7\u6599\u3068\u306a\u308b\u300e\u4e00\u904d\u8056\u7e6a\u300f\u3068\u300e\u4e00\u904d\u4e0a\u4eba\u7e6a\u8a5e\u4f1d\u300f\u3092\u4e2d\u5fc3\u306b\u3001\u653f\u6cbb\u3084\u4ecf\u6559\u53f2\u3068\u3082\u7d61\u307e\u305b\u306a\u304c\u3089\u8ad6\u3058\u3066\u3044\u304d\u305f\u3044\u3068\u8003\u3048\u3066\u3044\u308b\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Birth<br \/>\nIppen was born the second son of Michihiro at Hogonji temple in Iyo province\u2019s Onsen district, in the Okudani area of Dogo, eighteen years after the end of the Jokyu uprising, when the fortune of the Kono family had been completely lost.\u00a0He was born on the fifteenth day of the second month of En\u2019o 1(1239), and his childhood name was Shojumaru. Because his father Michihiro was granted the title Befu Shichirozaemonnojo, it is thought he took the Kono village of Beppu as his headquarters.<br \/>\n(Ippen 29\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u3088\u308a)<\/p>\n<p>\u51fa\u751f<br \/>\n\u4e00\u904d\u306f\u5909\u5f8c\u5341\u516b\u5e74\u7d4c\u3063\u3066\u3001\u6cb3\u91ce\u5bb6\u306e\u6614\u65e5\u306e\u7e41\u6804\u304c\u5168\u304f\u5931\u308f\u308c\u305f\u3053\u308d\u3001\u4f0a\u4e88\u56fd\u6e29\u6cc9\u90e1\u9053\u5f8c\u5965\u8c37\u306e\u5b9d\u53b3\u5bfa\u306e\u5730\u306b\u901a\u5e83\u306e\u4e8c\u7537\u3068\u3057\u3066\u751f\u307e\u308c\u305f\u3002<br \/>\n\u6642\u306b\u5ef6\u5fdc\u5143\u5e74(1239)\u4e8c\u6708\u5341\u4e94\u65e5\u3067\u3042\u308b\u3002\u5e7c\u540d\u306f\u677e\u5bff\u4e38\u3002\u7236\u901a\u5e83\u306f\u5225\u5e9c\u4e03\u90ce\u5de6\u885b\u9580\u5c09\u3068\u79f0\u3057\u3066\u3044\u305f\u306e\u3067\u3001\u6cb3\u91ce\u90f7\u306e\u5225\u5e9c\u3092\u672c\u62e0\u3068\u3057\u3066\u3044\u305f\u3082\u306e\u3068\u601d\u308f\u308c\u308b\u3002<\/p>\n<p>Renouncing the world\u00a0Studying under Shodatsu of Dazaifu\u00a0Regarding Ippen\u2019s renunciation of the world, the Ippen hijirie states:<br \/>\nWhen he was ten, mourning his mother\u2019s death, he awakened for the\u00a0first time to the principle of impermanence. Following the command\u00a0of his father, he left home to become a renunciant, taking the Dharma\u00a0name Zuien ( Ippen hijirie, fascicle 1 )<br \/>\n(Ippen 33\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u3088\u308a)<\/p>\n<p>\u51fa\u5bb6<br \/>\n\u5927\u5bb0\u5e9c\u306e\u8056\u9054\u306e\u3082\u3068\u3078<br \/>\n\u4e00\u904d\u306e\u51fa\u5bb6\u306b\u3064\u3044\u3066\u3000\u300e\u4e00\u904d\u8056\u7e6a\u300f\u306f\u6b21\u306e\u3088\u3046\u306b\u8a18\u3057\u3066\u3044\u308b\u3002<br \/>\n\u5341\u6b73\u306b\u3066\u60b2\u6bcd\u306b\u304f\u308c\u3066\u59cb\u3081\u3066\u7121\u5e38\u306e\u7406\u3092\u3055\u3068\u308a\u7d66\u3072\u306c<br \/>\n\u3064\u3090\u306b\u7236\u306e\u547d\u3092\u3046\u3051\u51fa\u5bb6\u3092\u3068\u3052\u3066\u6cd5\u540d\u306f\u968f\u7e01\u3068\u7533\u3057\u3051\u308b\u304c<br \/>\n\u4e91\u3005<\/p>\n<p>Before long, Ippen retracted his steps to Zenkoji temple. Why did Ippen, who was earnestly seeking his own liberation, select Zenkoji temple as his first destination? This is an important question. The decisive factor in his decision to worship at Shinano\u2019s Zenkoji temple was, of course, his own faith in the compassion of the temple\u2019s main object of worship, which was an Amida image that was considered to be alive. However, the influence of Zenkoji faith at that time and of Zenkoji hijirie provided the background for this.<br \/>\n(Ippen 45\u30da\u30fc\u30b8\u3088\u308a)<\/p>\n<p>\u307b\u3069\u306a\u304f\u4e00\u904d\u306f\u5f15\u304d\u304b\u3048\u3057\u5584\u5149\u5bfa\u306b\u53c2\u8a63\u3057\u3066\u3044\u308b\u3002\u81ea\u5df1\u306e\u89e3\u8131\u3092\u4e00\u9014\u306b\u6c42\u3081\u3001\u305d\u306e\u6700\u521d\u306e\u5730\u3068\u3057\u3066\u5584\u5149\u5bfa\u3092\u9078\u3093\u3067\u3044\u308b\u3053\u3068\u306f\u3001\u91cd\u8981\u306a\u554f\u984c\u3067\u3042\u308b\u3002<br \/>\n\u4e00\u904d\u304c\u4fe1\u6fc3\u306e\u5584\u5149\u5bfa\u306b\u53c2\u8a63\u3059\u308b\u3053\u3068\u3092\u6c7a\u610f\u3057\u305f\u306e\u306f\u3001\u3082\u3061\u308d\u3093\u5584\u5149\u5bfa\u672c\u5c0a\u751f\u8eab\u5f25\u9640\u5982\u6765\u306e\u6148\u60b2\u3092\u4fe1\u4ef0\u3057\u3066\u3044\u308b\u304b\u3089\u306b\u4ed6\u306a\u3089\u306a\u3044\u3002<br \/>\n\u3057\u304b\u3057\u3053\u308c\u306b\u306f\u5f53\u6642\u306e\u5584\u5149\u5bfa\u4fe1\u4ef0\u3084\u5584\u5149\u5bfa\u8056\u306e\u5b58\u5728\u304c\u80cc\u666f\u306b\u3042\u3063\u305f\u3053\u3068\u3092\u5fd8\u308c\u3066\u306f\u306a\u3089\u306a\u3044\u3002<\/p>\n<p>The Nonduality of Ten and One<br \/>\nIppen, who copied the painting of the two rivers and the white path at Zenkoji temple, returned to Iyo in the autumn of Bun\u2019ei 8 (1271) and hung it in his hermitage at Kubodera temple, where he began the life of the exclusive nembutsu. It was here that Ippen composed the verse on the \u201cnonduality of ten and one\u201d(juichi funi \u5341\u4e00\u4e0d\u4e8c), which could be called the center of his thought. The Ippen hijirie (fascile 1) records the following :<br \/>\nAt Kubodera temple in Iyo, he removed the dark green moss and the blue-green moss from the peaceful land. He built a hut with a pine gate and a brushwood door. On the east wall, he hung as the main object of worship the two rivers. He did not mingle with other people, but passed his time in quietly walking around. He abandoned all affairs of the world and devoted himself to reciting the name. Nothing interfered with his efforts to practice the four postures tirelessly, and he welcomed the passing of three springs and autumns.
